Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for NYC in First Address
On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an bold commencement to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Figure
The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
