The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, so the penalty easily payable for the wealthy owner.

This event comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Packers.
